Estimation stations!

Today in maths we have been using the language of estimation. We talk about an estimate being a sensible guess. We started by estimating how many children we could fit into the big rectangle and then tried it with hula hoops. I have to say, children were really able to grasp the idea. We managed to fit nine children in a big red hula hoop, and seven in a smaller blue hula hoop.
Then during free flow we tried it out with some objects around the classroom and found that our guesses were really very accurate! Great work guys!

Reception bustling with activity!

We’ve been awfully busy working hard in our new office. Who knew there would be so many things to type?
We’ve been really patiently threading beads or make some lovely necklaces and bracelets.
We’ve been exploring different textures and colours too!

There has been some brilliant writing!

And some amazing construction projects.

We’ve been relaxing in the sun…

Working together to make entire towns…

and we’ve even been making some tunes of our own!

We’re such a creative bunch!

We even discovered life in one of our buckets!
We’ve also really been takin advantage of the sun shine. We love exploring our wild flower garden and watching the insects as they  enjoy the flowers to one. We’ve used tape measures to measure how tall our sunflowers are growing, and we’ve collected the colourful petals that have fallen from the flowers.

My how you’ve grown!

Look at how much our little friends have grown over the weekend!

The saga continues. Look at how much our insect friends have changed! They have become really furry and they have filled their special pot with silk. It looks like they are getting ready to turn themselves into cocoons!

Returning after the weekend and we now have cocoons! It will be interesting to observe our last catterpillar today and watch him turn into a chrysalis too!

We have. Over our friends into their new home. We carefully removed the lid of the pot to reveal five beautiful and delicate chrysalis. They will hang here now until they finally reveal themselves as lovely butterflies.

Fantastic Friday!

Here’s a sneaky look at some of things we’ve been getting up to today!
We’ve been making some lovely hand print catterpillars!

We have pulled up some of our potatoes! Who knew that they were part of the roots?

As usual we have been very artistic, both indoors and out!

Today we received a mysterious package that said ‘open immediately’. We had some great ideas about what could be inside and we were even happier when we discovered these furry looking little insects! They seem to be moving around a lot and some of them seem to be wriggling around inside something that looks a little bit like a spiders’ web! There are four of them! We can’t wait to see what changes happen over the next few days either!
Do you know what stage of the life cycle will happen next?

Last week we had to move the chicks to their new house. The incubator was getting far too small for our energetic little chicks! Both reception classes came into RR’s class and we talked about the three things that every living thing does. Can you remember what those things are? We moved the chicks very carefully, making sure that their new home was cosy and had food and water. We also talked about what living things needed to keep on living! look at how cosy they are under their new light bulb. It wasn’t any normal light bulb! Can you remember why it was different?

We all got the chance of holding one of  our new friends too and used some lovely language to describe them.

How did you think the chicks felt? Some of us thought they felt very soft, warm and almost like a blanket! Look at how gently the children are holding the chicks. Well done everyone!

Happy Monday!!
